Bridge Building 101: Piles of Sheet?

Three loads of sheet piling were delivered to the south end of the Pea Island breach yesterday. So, what is sheet piling? Here's the definition, according to Collins English Dictionary:

sheet pile n (Engineering / Civil Engineering) Civil engineering
one of a group of piles made of timber, steel, or prestressed concrete set close together to resist lateral pressure, as from earth or water
